How to Build a Patient Nurture Sequence That Actually Converts
The 97% You’re Ignoring
Here’s a marketing truth that changes everything once you understand it:
Only 3% of people searching for your services are ready to book today.
The other 97%? They’re researching. Comparing. Thinking about it. Waiting for the “right time.”
Most clinics focus all their marketing on the 3%, running ads that push for immediate appointments, hoping website visitors pick up the phone right away.
But what happens to the 97%?
They leave. They forget about you. When they’re finally ready to book, they search again, and probably find your competitor.
This is where nurture sequences change the game.
What Is a Nurture Sequence?
A nurture sequence (sometimes called a drip campaign or email sequence) is a series of automated messages that stay in touch with leads over time.
Instead of hoping that one website visit converts into a booking, you capture their information and continue the relationship until they’re ready to become a patient.
It’s the difference between meeting someone at a party and hoping they remember you, versus exchanging numbers and staying in touch.
The Lead Magnet: Your Entry Point
Nurture sequences start with a lead magnet, something valuable you offer in exchange for an email address.
Effective lead magnets for clinics include:
PDF Guides: “5 Stretches for Lower Back Pain” or “The Complete Guide to Choosing a Chiropractor” Checklists: “Pre-Surgery Preparation Checklist” or “Daily Mobility Routine” Video Training: “3 Exercises to Reduce Neck Pain” or “Understanding Your Diagnosis” Assessments: “Take Our Pain Assessment Quiz” or “Is Your Posture Causing Your Headaches?”
The key is solving a specific problem your ideal patient has. Generic lead magnets attract generic leads.
Anatomy of a Converting Nurture Sequence
Once someone downloads your lead magnet, here’s what an effective 7-email sequence looks like:
Email 1: Delivery + Welcome (Immediate)
Deliver what they asked for and set expectations.
“Here’s your guide! In the coming days, I’ll send you additional tips to help with [problem]. Look for emails from [your name].”
Goal: Deliver value, establish trust, set expectations
Email 2: Quick Win (Day 1-2)
Share one actionable tip they can implement immediately.
“While you’re reviewing the guide, here’s something you can do right now to start feeling better…”
Goal: Demonstrate expertise, provide immediate value
Email 3: Story/Connection (Day 3-4)
Share a patient story or your own journey. Make an emotional connection.
“Last month, Sarah came in barely able to walk. She’d tried everything, pills, injections, even considered surgery. Here’s what happened…”
Goal: Build trust through social proof and relatability
Email 4: Education (Day 5-7)
Teach something that positions your approach as the solution.
“Most people don’t realize that [common misconception]. Here’s what’s actually causing [problem] and what you can do about it…”
Goal: Educate and position your unique approach
Email 5: FAQ/Objection Handling (Day 8-10)
Address common concerns that prevent people from booking.
“You might be wondering: How long does treatment take? Is it painful? What if I’ve tried this before and it didn’t work?”
Goal: Remove barriers to booking
Email 6: Soft Offer (Day 12-14)
Invite them to take the next step without pressure.
“If you’re ready to stop living with [problem], I’d love to help. Here’s what a first visit looks like…”
Goal: Present the opportunity to work with you
Email 7: Direct Offer (Day 16-18)
Make a clear call to action with urgency.
“I have a few openings this week for new patients. If you’re ready to [achieve outcome], book your appointment here.”
Goal: Convert to appointment
Writing Tips That Increase Opens and Clicks
Subject Lines Matter:
Keep them short (under 40 characters) Create curiosity without being clickbait Use the person’s name occasionally Test questions vs. statements
The First Line Hooks:
Start with their problem or desire Never start with “I” or your practice name Make it personal and conversational
One Call to Action:
Each email should have ONE clear ask Make links obvious and easy to click Repeat the CTA at least twice
Segmentation: The Secret Weapon
Not all leads are the same. Someone who downloaded a “neck pain” guide has different concerns than someone who grabbed your “athlete performance” guide.
Segment your list by:
Lead magnet topic (tells you their primary concern) Engagement level (opens, clicks) Where they came from (ad, social, referral) How far through the sequence they are
This lets you send more relevant messages, which dramatically improves conversion rates.
Automation: Set It and Forget It
The beauty of nurture sequences is that they work without you.
Once set up in your email platform (ConvertKit, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, etc.), the sequence runs automatically for every new lead.
While you’re seeing patients, your nurture sequence is:
Building trust with new leads Answering their questions Establishing your expertise Converting them into booked appointments
Beyond Email: Multi-Channel Nurture
Email is the foundation, but sophisticated nurture systems include multiple touchpoints:
Retargeting ads that follow visitors around the web SMS sequences for higher open rates Social media content that reinforces your messaging Direct mail for high-value leads
Each channel reinforces the others, keeping you top of mind until they’re ready to book.
Measuring Success
Track these metrics for your nurture sequence:
Open rates (industry average: 20-25%) Click rates (industry average: 2-5%) Unsubscribe rates (should be under 0.5% per email) Conversion rate (leads who become patients)
If open rates are low, improve your subject lines. If click rates are low, improve your content and CTAs. If unsubscribe rates are high, you’re either emailing too often or your content isn’t relevant.
The Compound Effect
Here’s where it gets exciting:
Let’s say you capture 100 leads per month with your lead magnet. Without a nurture sequence, maybe 3 of them book immediately.
With a nurture sequence? You might convert another 10-15 over the following weeks. That’s 4-5x the patients from the same traffic.
Over a year, the difference is enormous.
Building Your First Sequence
Start simple:
Create one lead magnet for your ideal patient Write a 5-7 email sequence following the framework above Set up automation in your email platform Add the lead magnet offer to your website Track results and improve over time
You don’t need fancy software or perfect copy. You need a system that stays in touch with leads until they’re ready to become patients.
That’s how you capture the 97%.
